A woman doused her husband with petrol and set him on fire before killing herself in a suspected case of domestic violence in Harare’s Mabelreign suburb Wednesday morning.

The man is battling for life at a city hospital.

In a shocking incident that occurred in Harare’s normally serene suburb of Mabelreign, a woman drank poison and died after setting her husband ablaze.

The husband, however, survived and was rushed to hospital.

Though circumstances leading to the incident are not clear, a neighbour Ms Betty Kamuti said they were awoken by noises of a man crying for help in the early hours of Wednesday.

Ms Kamuti said she discovered that it was the neighbour only identified as Machimbirike who had been badly burnt.

She said Machimbirike said he had been burnt by his wife Mai Kudzi.

Fearing his husband had died, the woman is alleged to have taken poison and died at the neighbour’s gate.

Most of the neighbours said they knew nothing about the family as it was said to be very reserved.

Some of the neighbours pointed out that in a number of incidents they had seen the members of the family fighting running battles on the streets.

This news crew witnessed the ugly side of the family when a daughter to the deceased turned violent.

The ZBC News vehicle was also damaged by one of the family members and a report was made at Mabelreign police station.
