A 17-year-old teenager from Bikita in Masvingo allegedly fatally struck his brother following an argument over the quality of cement bought for the construction of a house at their homestead. The incident confirmed by Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero occurred on Thursday at about 8pm.
He identified the deceased as Vengesai Tasaratoga (19) of Manyika Village under Chief Mukanganwi.
His body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
He said the 17-year-old boy has since been arrested and was in police custody.  He said he would appear in court soon facing a murder charge.
According to a fellow villager, the boy struck his drunken brother with a stone and he died two days later.
“On Tuesday at about 2pm the boy returned home from Nyika Business Centre where he had gone to buy some cement for the construction of their house. On reaching home, he met his elder brother Vengesai who was drunk,” said the villager.
He said Vengesai accused his younger brother of buying poor quality cement and that did not go down well with the young brother.
“A misunderstanding ensued between the two leading to Vengesai striking his brother with stones.
“He hit him on the back and the brother retaliated by also striking the now deceased with a stone on the left jaw. He fell down and became unconscious,” said the villager.
After close to an hour, Vengesai regained consciousness but he was complaining of a painful neck and headache.
“On Wednesday he also woke up complaining of some pain all over the body. He spent the whole day sleeping at his homestead and on Thursday at around 8pm he died,” said the source.
A report was made to the police who attended the scene leading to the boy’s arrest.
